Concerns of Making a Good Cement Tile

Cement tiled floors are a matter of great pride for house owners. They help in creating an identity and also are expressions of your taste and character. Not all homes in Holland boast cement tiled floors, and those that have them are distinctive. A good cement tile speaks volumes about the maker who invests enough time in creating them. Many are out there in The Netherlands who manufacture cement tiles. But to score the best, there are a number of things that need to be taken care of minutely.

A cement tile is created and not manufactured. A combination of artistic brilliance and geometric perfection is the key creating a good cement tile. There are certain concerns about making a tile: design, colour selection, and cement used. Each of these concerns needs to be addressed before a cement tile is actually made.

Design – Design is the identity of a cement tile. Designing is not simple as it involves making of moulds from copper strips. Strips are welded together in different patterns to create moulds. Making these moulds in floral, geometric or any other regular pattern requires an artist’s imagination. These moulds are filled with different pigments to form coloured patterns as they appear on cement tiles. A same mould with different colour combinations yield differently patterned tiles.

Colour selection – Colour selection is the next important aspect of making a good cement tile. Leading makers of floor tiles in The Netherlands or elsewhere prefer to use mineral based pigments as they offer a richer look to the floors. Mineral pigments also retain their colour for many years, even generations. There are many hundred year old buildings with cement tile floors that have retained the original lustre. Even when used outdoors, these colours do not fast easily.

Cement used – If pattern and colours determine the appearance of a floor tile, then cement forms the building block. To make a cement tile two varieties of cement are mandatorily used: Portland and coarse. These two are poured and evened out one after another inside a dice containing the designing mould filled with coloured pigments. Only superior quality cements are used in making cement floor tiles. These two varieties of cement are mixed in definite proportions to give the desired strength to a tile.

With these concerns taken care of, making a good cement tile becomes elementary. After the pigments and cement are poured into a dice, the same is subjected to mechanical pressure applied by an electrically operated hydraulic press. This is the only mechanised process in an otherwise manual method of creation. This mechanised process however ensures uniformity of strength for the cement tiles.
